La famiglia è originaria da Firenze dal 1409. Si trasferì prima a Pisa indi a Pietrasanta e nel XVII secolo a Carrara. Dai duchi d'Este ottenne la nobiltà di Novellara ed il titolo di conte e dal Granduca Pietro Leopoldo, la nobiltà Pisana. Ha contratto cospicue parentele per matrimonio con le famiglie: Staffetti, Sarteschi, Tenderini, Pio di Savoia, Ceccopieri, Monzoni, De Nobili, Bayard-de-Volo, Giannelli di Veppo, Bentivoglio, Pisani, Ginnasi, Rasponi, Zacchia, Della Torre. Il conte Cesare nato il 12 luglio 1822, cavaliere Mauriziano ebbe per figlio nel 1865 Carlo, presidente della Commissione conservatrice dei monumenti ed opere d'arte per la provincia di Massa e Carrara, socio della Regia Deputazione di Storia Patria per le provincie modenesi e della Società ligure di Storia Patria nonché della reale accademia di Arti di Carrara. Nell'almanacco di corte di Modena figurano come magistrati dei protettori nel 1836 Pietro, Francesco, Carlo, Giorgio e Pietro, e
