Antica e nobilissima casata spagnola, divisa in diversi rami, tutti di provata nobiltà, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Europa e del mondo. In Spagna, come detto, questa prosapia risulta divisa in moltissimi rami, tra cui: Medina de Pomar (Burgos), Medina de Rioseco, Medina del Campo (Valladolid), Medina de las Torres (Badajoz) e Medina-Sidonia (Cádiz). Moltissimi i personaggi che in essa hanno trovato i natali. Berenguer de Medina fu capitano delle schiere cristiane; Gonzalo Hernández aggiunse anche Medina al suo primo cognome. Egli apparteneva al Consiglio del Re di León, Don Ramiro, ed i suoi servigi alla Corona Aragonese gli valsero l'autorizzazione ad usare l'arme del regno di León. Un altro Medina, Don Martín de Medina, fu tra i cavalieri che accompagnarono il re Fernando III el Santo alla conquista dell'Andalusia.
