La palabra M. en el lenguaje árabe, significa ciudad y muchas familias nobles originarias de algunas ciudades, a las que los moros dieronle el nombre de M., tomaron éste como apellido. En Villena (Alicante) radicó otra casa del apellido que nos ocupa, de la que fue oriundo José Alonso de M., señor de lugar de Benámer, que pertenece al ayuntamiento de Muro y partido judicial de Cocentaina, en la misma provincia. Dicho caballero, queriendo avecindarse en la ciudad de Onteniente (Valencia) probó su nobleza siendo recibido como hijodalgo notorio. Pariente del anterior fue Cristóbal Alonso de M., que fundó una casa solar en la villa de Agrés, del citado partido de Cocentaina. El Capitán Cristóbal de M., se embarcó en Sanlúcar de Barrameda, con veinticinco jinetes, acompañando al capitán Miguel de Moxica, que vino a la conquista de Canarias. Los de Castilla probaron su nobleza en las Ordenes de Santiago,
