Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno di Napoli, originaria della Lucania ma con nuclei anche in Campania ed in Calabria, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse città d'Italia e del Mondo, con insediamenti più cospicui in America Latina. Originaria della città di Rivello, ove risiedeva nel Rione Rotale, questa nobile prosapia raggiunse il suo massimo splendore nel XVIII secolo, quando il conte Gio. Battista Megale prese in moglie la baronessa Curcio di Polla, nipote diretta del principe Caracciolo di Napoli. Entrambi risiedettero nell'imponente palazzo di famiglia, le cui origini risalgono all'anno mille e su cui capeggia lo stemma dei Megale, i cui elementi rimandano ad una origine orientale del casato. Il Palazzo si distingue anche per gli importanti affreschi, realizzati dal giovane pittore Lanziani di Lauria che dipingerà poi anche le volte della chiesa di San Nicola.
