Trasse il nome dal castello omonimo presso Teramo che possedeva fin dal XII secolo, e si stabilì in principio del XIII in quella città, di cui divenne signora. La tremenda vendetta degli Acquaviva ridusse i Melatino a miserevole stato nella metà del XVI secolo perchè avevano fatto uccidere Andrea Acquaviva Duca d'Atri e signore di Teramo nei primi anni del secolo XV. Ha goduto questa famiglia ventotto baronie e si estinse nei Berarducci nobili di Teramo. Matteo Cavaliere di Federico II nel 1225; Gulgielmo famigliare di Re Roberto e suo podestà e vicario in Anagni nel 1335; Berardo capitano del popolo e podestà di Firenze nel 1347; Roberto, regio capitano di Campli, nel 1394 riuscì a farsi signore di Teramo; Corrado Vescovo di Teramo dal 1396 al 1405; Mariano bajulo reginale e giudice civile della città e diocesi di Aquila nel 1456.
