Ele recebeu o nome do castelo de mesmo nome perto de Teramo, que possuía desde o século XII, e se estabeleceu no início do XIII naquela cidade, da qual se tornou dama. A terrível vingança dos Acquavivas reduziu os Melatinos a um estado miserável em meados do século XVI, porque mataram Andrea Acquaviva, duque de Atri e senhor de Teramo no início do século XV. Vinte e oito barões desfrutaram dessa família e foram extintos na nobre família Berarducci de Teramo. Matteo Cavaliere de Federico II em 1225; Família Gulgielmo do rei Roberto e seu podestà e vigário em Anagni em 1335; Berardo capitão do povo e podestà de Florença em 1347; Roberto, capitão real de Campli, em 1394 conseguiu tornar-se senhor de Teramo; Bispo de Teramo, Corrado, de 1396 a 1405; Mariano bajulo reginale e juiz civil da cidade e diocese de Aquila em 1456.
