Antica ed assai nobile famiglia della Sardegna, oriunda dalla Spagna, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e d'Europa, con un cospicuo insediamento in Olanda. Essa ebbe prima residenza nella città di Fonni da donde poi si portò in Cagliari. Il suo rango discende dalla concessione nobiliare fatta da Filippo III, re di Spagna, con diploma 16 aprile 1610, a favore di Giovanni Stefano Melis, dei suoi figli e discendenti per linea maschile. I discendenti di questa famiglia intervenivano nella qualità di nobili alle corti generali del regno: Don Raimondo Melis (1774 – 9 giugno 1859), con il figlio Don Stefano (+ 1855 circa), era infatti compreso nell'Elenco Ufficiale delle persone nobili dimoranti nella città di Cagliari nel 1825, conservato nell'Archivio della R. Segreteria di Stato e di Guerra presso il viceré di Sardegna. Spettano dunque a questa famiglia i titoli di cavaliere
