Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno di Napoli, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Nota in Napoli sin dal secolo decimoquinto, da questa famiglia trasse i natali il capitano Nicola Melissari che, insieme ai suoi militi, conquistò l'intera Calabria nel nome della corona aragonese e per tal motivo fu dal Re Alfonso d'Aragona nobilitato e donato della ricca baronia de Proditoribus in Calabria. Divenuta feudataria e potente in Reggio Calabria, fu questa famiglia aggregata anche alla primaria nobiltà di detta città ove ha continuato a fiorire e diramare nobilmente ed anzi, come si legge nell'opera "Storia Di Reggio Di Calabria: Da' Tempi Primitivi Sino All' Anno Di Cristo 1797" di di Domenico Spanò Bolani, essa divenne "una delle più nobili, ricche e potenti".
