Varano de' Melegari, in Provincia di Parma, circondario di Borgo S. Donnino, fu la culla dei Melegari che, dagli aviti domini, passati poi in proprietà dei Pallavicino e degli Sforza, furono costretti a fuggire per avversa fortuna, intorno al 1460. Ripararono nelle vicinanze, dal momento che, a Varese Ligure, morì di peste nel 1527, un Giovanni Battista Melegari; Antonio, ricordato come un uomo colto e seguace da A. Cesena, in una cronaca del 1558, si era pure trasferito da Taglieto a Varese Ligure, agli inizi del secolo XVI, con il figlio Orsino. Nacquero da Orsino: Pietro Paolo e Giovanni Battista i quali dall'imperatore Massimiliano II, furono nominati conti Palatini. L'imperiale diploma datato da Vienna il 9 novembre 1569 è indirizzato al "rispettabile, dotto nostro diletto e del S. I. Pietro Paolo Melegari, Dottore di S. M. e del Sacro palazzo Lateranenese" e lo nomina conte dell'Aula Cesarea e del Concistoro
