Nobili cavalieri bolognesi insigniti del titolo marchionale e fregiati della dignità patrizia il 5 Feb. 1499 per servigi prestati al pubblico nella guerra d'Italia di quel tempo. Per negligenza di dare in nota i figli al libro d'oro perdettero l'uso del grado, e col volger degli anni passò in dimenticanza la loro nobiltà. Nel 1686 domandarono di provarsi discendenti legittimi da quelli che l'avevano ottenuta, e fatte le debite prove, furono riconosciuti e reintegrati nell'avita nobiltà il 17 Sett. dello stesso anno. Altro ramo. Originaria di Cremona, trovasi stabilita in Reggio fin dal secolo XV, ed insignita del titolo comitale sui principii del XVIII. Un Pietro Melli, che fioriva verso il 1540, è autore di una cronaca inedita di Reggio; un Domenico-Maria podestà di Sassuolo nel 1622, e due anni dopo di Teano; un altro Pietro professore di musica verso la metà del XVII secolo.
