Una delle più antiche famiglie di Venezia che diede uomini insigni nelle lettere e nelle magistrature. Due uomini illustrano maggiormente questa famiglia: Pietro, poeta, letterato e storico, uno dei restauratori della lingua italiana. Nacque nella seconda metà del secolo XV e fu creato cardinale da papa Paolo III nel 1539. Fu Segretario domestico di papa Leone X che gli prese tanto affetto da voler che si chiamasse col suo nome de' Medici, e contornasse l'arma con le palle. Il suo ritratto è dipinto dal Tiziano nella sala del Maggior Consiglio nel Palazzo Ducale. Giovanni nato Venezia, nel 1543, fu uomo di grande valore nelle armi come generale di mare in Istria, Dalmazia ed Albania. Salì al dogado nel novembre del 1615 e morì il 19 maggio 1618 in età di anni 75. E' sepolto nella chiesa dei SS. Giov. e Paolo. E' iscritto nell'Elenco ufficiale col titolo di N. U.
