Família das principais da cidade de Toledo, cujo solar fica no vale de M., em Castela-a-Velha. Passou a Portugal em época ignorada. No século XVI vivia em Pinhel Pedro de M., aí casado com Catarina do Couto, filha de Domingos Pires do Couto e de sua mulher, Isabel Monteiro, senhores da quinta de Magide, e cujo matrimónio proveio larga geração, existente na província da Beira. Sinal de nobreza deste apelido é o brasão aqui apresentado, que confirma, através de seus símbolos, numa leitura histórico-heráldica, a certeza de um valor histórico-nobiliário. Uma das famílias portuguesa usa as seguintes armas: de azul, com cinco estrelas de ouro, de oito raios, postas em sautor. Alias: Cortado: o primeiro de prata, com dois lobos de negro, passantes, um sobre o outro; o segundo de vermelho, com duas caldeiras de ouro, uma sobre a outra; bordadura de vermelho, carregada de oito aspas de ouro.
