Giorgio Menabrea (died 1785), son of a shepherd from Valtournanche, was a lieutenant of militias (1745) of the duchy of Aosta. He later had the office of the duchy of lieutenant judge. It was his son Ottavio, who moved his residence to Chambèry. Leone and Federico were born from him (10 April 1804, dec. 24 May 1857). Leone pursued his judicial career, and in 1851 he was an appeal councilor in Chambèry. He was assigned, as a councilor, to the extraordinary legation in Milan for peace of 1849. He was a literary historian of prestige, secretary of the Academy of Savoy, and a member of the R. Deputation of Storia Patria (1852). With his brother Federico he was ennobled on 30 December 1843.
