Spanische Familie, deren ursprünglicher Nachname anscheinend Abendanho war, die später nach Bendanha und damit zu M. überging. Ihr Herrenhaus befindet sich in Biscaia, wo João de M., verheiratet mit D. Brites de Fonseca, Sohn von Pedro Ulhoa da Fonseca, der war der Vater von Pedro de M. und Francisco de M., die beide nach Portugal überführt wurden. Einige Autoren behaupten, dass die portugiesischen Mendanhas nicht von dem oben genannten João de M. stammen, sondern von Luís de M., einem sehr geehrten asturischen Adligen, der zur Zeit von D. João II. von Kastilien, der verheiratet war, in Paredinas lebte an D. Isabel de Valenzuela, Schwester von D. João de Valenzuela, Prior des Malteserordens in Kastilien, aus dessen Ehe Pedro de M. (oben) geboren wurde. Nach Angaben derselben Autoren empfing Luís de M. in seiner zweiten Hochzeit. D. Ana de Chaves, Tochter von Alonso Garcia de Chaves, der Pedro Garcia de Chaves
