Antica casata spagnola, anticamente detta Abendanho, poi Bendanha ed infine Mendanha, di chiara ed avita nobiltà, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee. Le prime notizie storiche certe, relative alla famiglia Mendanha, si hanno in Biscaglia. Ivi, infatti, nel 1430, fioriva João de Mendanha, marito di D. Brites de Fonseca, del fu Pedro Ulhoa da Fonseca, il quale fu padre di Pedro de Mendanha e di Francisco de Mendanha, i quali passarono a risiedere in Portogallo. Tuttavia alcuni autori affermano che la famiglia Mendanha del Portogallo non discenda dal predetto João de M. ma da Luís de Mendanha, gentiluomo asturiano assai autorevole, vivente in Paredes, al tempo di D. Giovanni II di Castiglia, e che era sposato con D. Isabel de Valenzuela, sorella di D. João de Valenzuela, priore dell'Ordine di Malta in Castiglia, dalla quale ebbe Pedro de M., predetto.
