Si ritiene che i membri di questa famiglia, di antichissima origine trevigiana, abbiano avuto per capostipite un Albertino, che fu Console di Treviso nel 1216. Giove suo figlio era capitano della milizia a Conegliano. Contemporaneamente erano anche diffusi nella Toscana; dai significati di un'arme appartenente a questa famiglia azzurro con albero verde terrazzato, leone d'oro controrampante ed una stella d'argento di sei punte in capo rilevansi le virtù magnanime dei M. Molti di loro presero parte ai moti della fazione Guelfa. Poi questa famiglia si trova maggiormente diffusa a Modena e nel Veneto. Un Gaetano di Modena, comandante nelle truppe della Repubblica Cisalpina, rimase morto per un colpo di obice all'assedio del castello di Ferrara nel 1799.
