Hubo una casa de este apellido en la villa de Mondragón (Guipúzcoa), y de ella fueron los hermanos Fernando y Juan de M. y Oquendo, naturales de Mondragón, y el segundo Caballero de Santiago en 1649, y Juan Bautista de M. y Vizcaya (hijo del citado Fernando), natural de Mondragón y Caballero de Calatrava, en 1694. Hay en España distintas casas Mercado. Desde muy remotos siglos fué conocida y muy considerada. Los historiadores hacen notar acertadamente que no todos los linajes de este apellido tienen un origen común. Lo encontramos en Guipúzcoa. Las armas más antiguas son las señaladas en: El solar vasco navarro - Tomo quinto A. y A. Garcia Carraffa Libreria internacional. Los de Guipúzcoa traen: De azur, con una banda de oro, de dos piezas, acompañada de dos soles de oro, uno a cada lado. Otros traen: Escudo de oro, un leon rampante de gules y cuatro flores de lis de azur, una en cada canton o ángulo del escudo, bordura de gules y ocho aspas de oro.
