Famiglia anteriore al 1300. Famiglia che praticò la mercatura, ne è prova il cognome, giungendo a particolare ricchezza imparentandosi con illustri famiglie di Pistoia. Il capo d'argento caricato di uno scudo antico seminato di Francia, con un bastone d'argento posto in banda sul tutto, è sicuramente una concessione per alti servigi dati dai Merciuoli. Questa famiglia porta lo scudo bandato; ovvero coperto di sei bande alternate ciascuna di smalto differente fra loro. L a banda era simbolo delle antiche nobile famiglie guelfe e rappresental cavalierato o alti gradi delle antiche milizie. Piero di Filippo Merciuli ebbe in moglie Madonna Beatrice figlia di messer Cino Sigibuldi o Sinibuldi, come risulta dal testamento fatto dalla stessa il 2 aprile 1389, e rogato dal notaio Ser Filippo di Ser Currado.
