Antico ed assai nobile casato europeo, con diramazioni in Germania, Prussia e Francia, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, anche nel Nuovo Mondo. La chiara nobiltà della famiglia Mercklin è ulteriormente confermata dalla sua presenza in alcune delle più importanti opere europee di araldica, tra cui "Johann Siebmachers allgemeines großes und vollständiges Wappenbuch" dell'araldista tedesco Johann Siebmacher (1561-1611), essenziale riferimento per la conoscenza della nobiltà del Sacro Romano Impero, e "Armorial général" dell'araldista e genealogista olandese Johannes Rietstap, monumentale armoriale contenente le blasonature delle più importanti casate d'Europa. Questa famgilia d'altronde vanta antichissime origini in Prussia, ove ebbe la nobiltà con il predicato di "Scheuerfeldt". Ancora più antiche origini trovasi nella città di Traben-Trarbach, nell'oggi Renania-Palatinato, in Germania. Ivi nacque infatti Hansel Johann Mercklin.
