Famiglia antica, originaria di S. Salvatore Monferrato, con memorie frammentarie che risalgono al secolo XIV. Il capostipite sicuro è Biagio Merli, figlio di Giacomo, in alto stato già a metà del secolo XVI. Era sua figlia quella Livia che il Navazzotti collocò fra le cento dame di Casale in fama di singolare bellezza e di splendore di vita. Egli sposò in prime nozze Eleonora Sannazzaro che, con rogito De Ottavi 14 ottobre 1553, gli portò in dote alcuni punti di giurisdizione sul fondo di Lazzarone oggi Villabella; in seconde nozze Silvia Gambaloita, pavese. Al lustro delle cariche pubbliche in patria egli aggiunse il lustro del titolo trasmissibile di Conte palatino concessogli da Papa S. Pio V il 6 maggio 1566. Dal secondo matrimonio ebbe tre figli: Antonio, Alessandro e Cesare. Cesare morì celibe; la discendenza di Alessandro si estinse nel 1724; Antonio continuò la schiatta. Discende da lui Ercole
