Questa famiglia, detta prima Merlotto, è di origine alemanna; venuta in Napoli fu nominata d'Alemagna. A' goduto nobiltà nelle città di Napoli, Amalfi, Firenze, Squillace, Sanseverino, Piacenza, Milano, Palermo e in Catalogna. Fu ricca di molti feudi, in diversi contadi, specialmente di Gravina, di Andria, di Conversano. Un Guido nel 1280 fu ammiraglio di Sicilia e giustiziere di Capitanata: un Alberto nel 1325 segretario dell'Imperatore Ludovico il Bavaro: un Giacomo nel 1425 ammiraglio della Flotta gerosolimitana. Un Giov. Francesco, ultimo conte di Pulcino, passato ai servigi di Francia, fu creato principe di Stigliano. Venuto poi nel reame con Luigi d'Angiò fu nominato Consigliere di Stato e Vicerè. In questa carica era stato preceduto nel 1228 da un Rinaldo, e nel 1272 da un Pietro. Da ultimo un Giorgio e un Leopoldo furono pure vicerè in Napoli.
