Di questa illustre famiglia, che dai feudi e signorie fin dal secolo XII goduti nel Frignano in territorio di Modena si disse prima de' Frignani o Farignani, hanno trattato ampiamente tutti gli scrittori di storia modenese - ed in ispecie il Briani, il Masini e il Magnani - che ne ricordano la parte importantissima da essa avuta sin dai primi del secolo XIII nella vita politica del Comune di Modena. Un Azzone nel 1226 rappresentava questa città in un compromesso per determinazione di confini coi Bolognesi. Ugolino suo figlio e come lui ascritto all'Ordine primo del ceto nobile, fu pure incaricato di importanti ambascerie, insieme al figlio Cesare, che in occasione di una di queste contrasse amicizia coi Faentini e, dopo aver militato al servizio loro, si trasferì col figlio Ottavio in Romagna. Altro figlio di Cesare fu il padre Tommaso, frate Minorita, celeberrimo predicatore e teologo, professore "in Divinitate"
