Cette famille est bien véritablement originaire de Bretagne où elle était établie depuis plusieurs siècles. On la retrouve à différentes époques, en divers localités et il y a eu nombreux personnages illustres de ce nom. On signale les personnages dignes de mémoire: Jean, maître d'hotêl des ducs Pierre II, Arthur III, François II et de la duchesse Anne, et poète du XVème siècle, eut ses œuvres imprimées à Nantes en 1493. Il avait épousé en 1444 Philippa d'Andouelle et mourut en 1491. La branche de Kerpond'armes fondue dans Saint-Martin, puis Cousturié et Champion. On remarque (dès le XIIIème siècle) des alliances importantes avec des familles nobles en Bretagne et autres régions françaises.
