Noble linaje de origen español, que se mudó a Nápoles durante el período virreinal español, con Don Ferdinando Messia, un invitado familiar y continuo del rey Felipe II de Habsburgo-España. La familia se vistió con el vestido de Malta en 1789 y, por sucesión de Casa Serra, obtuvo el título de príncipe de Carovigno, luego del matrimonio entre Donna Maria, hermana y heredera del príncipe Giovan Battista Serra, quien murió sin herederos en 1666. y Giovan Battista Messia y Prado, consejero real.
