Antica ed assai nobile famiglia tedesca, di chiara ed avita virtù, con nobili diramazioni in tutta la Germania ed in Austria. Una di queste fiorì in Friburgo, ove un Johann Georg Metzger morì nel 1615. Un altro Johann Georg, morto nel 1631 a Friburgo, era consigliere del reggimento. Il di lui figlio minore Josef Anton visse a Graz intorno al 1697. Suo fratello maggiore Johann Georg fu segretario di legazione a Costantinopoli. Il di lui figlio Johann Georg divenne sindaco e direttore delle poste a Brno nel 1663 e fu inviato dal 1683 a Vienna, al tempo dell'assedio turco. L'imperatore Leopoldo gli concesse il cavalierato imperiale con diploma dell'8 settembre 1690, insieme al predicatoo di Metisburgo. Un altro ramo è parimenti nobilmente fiorito in Dachau, Baviera; un altro in Norimberga, ove ricevette il fregio della nobiltà imperiale con diploma del 16 settembre 1746.
