Il cognome di questa antica famiglia di Pistoia è sicuramente un patronimico, cioè trae origine da qualche antenato della stessa, che per virtù e onore diede il suo nome a tutta la sua discendenza; alla base infatti è il nome Michele, di tradizione cristiana, anche se di origine ebraica e biblica. Michele è, infatti, un arcangelo, o principe degli angeli, che combatte armato satana e il male. Significa propriamente "chi è grande, potente come Dio". I pali in questo stemma, sono distintivo di parte ghibellina, e possono anche rappresentare le palizzate dei fortini o anche, il palo che i feudatari drizzavano davanti all'ingresso del castello. Però al dire del Crollalanza questa figura è molto diffusa nelle armi delle famiglie veneziane, le quali sono divenute feudatarie sul tardi. Altro ramo. nobile famiglia originaria di Bologna. Il commendator G.B. di Crollalanza riporta la blasonatura di questa famiglia nei volumi del suo Dizionario
