Famiglia originaria del Mugello, detta anticamente da Monte Giovi, da Campestri, e da Ghireto, dal nome dei luoghi nei quali aveva i possessi. Nell'antichissimo codice dell'arcivescovado fiorentino, detto il Bullettone, si legge che Rota, di Brunetto, vendè nel 1222 al vescovo di Firenze "omnes terras, domos fideles, possessiones et jura quae habebat in Castro de Rezano et Montegufone et Castro gelato"; dal che può dedursi che i R., al pari degli altri nobili del contado, avessero esercitato fino a quel momento una specie di signoria sui luoghi venduti. Nello stesso codice si legge pure che nel 1323 Rota, di Scherano, di Rota, si fece feudatario del predetto vescovo per certi beni posti a Bracciolatico, presso Campestri, località ove esiste tuttora la villa della famiglia R. E' da ritenersi che i R. fossero consorti dei Risaliti, sia per esser discesi dallo stesso luogo, sia per trovarsi sempre uniti nelle guerre e

Trinciato d'argento e di rosso, a due monti di sei (o tre) cime dell'uno nell'altro, ciascuno cimato da una stella a otto punte dello stesso, col capo di Santo Stefano.

Michelozzi di Firenze, Santo Spirito, Ferza, Santa Maria Novella e Unicorno. Nell'esemplare riportato dal Sepoltuario Rosselli per Giovanni Battista Michelozzi, S.Maria del Carmine, 1597, non appaiono le stelle. Lo stemma con il capo di S.Stefano si trova sul Palazzo Pretorio di Arezzo per il cavaliere Antonio Michelozzi, commissario nel 1642-43.
