Tuvo casa solar este apellido en el lugar de Gaztelu, del Ayuntamiento de Donamaría y partido judicial de Pamplona (Navarra). Miguel de M., natural de Gaztelu, contrajo matrimonio con doña María Domingo Dolarea, de igual naturaleza, y fueron padres de Fernando de M. y Domingo, natural de Gaztelu, que celebró su enlace con doña Maríá Catalina Ustariz, natural del lugar de Narvarte, en Navarra (hija de Miguel de Ustariz, natural de Narvarte, y de doña María de Vertiz, natural del lugar de Oyeregui, también en Navarra). De esa unión nació Juan Francisco de M. y Ustariz, natural de Gaztelu y Caballero de la Orden de Santiago desde el 28 de Marzo de 1767. En 1773, Juan Martín M., su mujer doña Graciana de Barreneche y los hijos de ambos, Juan Tomás, Pedro, Tomás José, Bautista, Teresa, Josefa y Joaquina M. y Barreneche, comparecieron ante los Tribunales de Navarra, solicitando ser reconocidos como nobles, por ser originarios de la casa solar de M., llamada de Micheonea, del mencionado lugar de Gaztelu. Obtuvieron sentencia favorable. Por Real carta de 24 de Octubre de 1861 sucedió en el título de Marqués de Val de Iñigo, Manuel M. y Mayora.
