Antica famiglia fra le primarie di Venezia. Vitale 1° fu doge dal 1096 al 1102; Domenico fu eletto doge nel 1118 e col suo valore dilatò il territorio in Levante, fugando e distruggendo le numerose forze terrestri e marittime che gli venivano opposte da Mori e dall'Imper. greco Emanuele. Con altri Principi collegati si portò all'assedio di Tiro e rinunciò alla corona di Sicilia, offertagli da quei popoli e lo stesso berretto dogale, essendosi ritirato nel 1129 nella solitudine; morì nel 1130 e fu sepolto nella chiesa S. Giorgio Maggiore. Nel febbraio del 1156 suo figlio Vitale fu letto doge. Reduce in patria da uno sfortunato scontro con l'Imperatore greco, soggiacque all'ingiusto furore popolare e venne ucciso il 28 maggio 1172. Leonardo, suo figlio, sostenne la carica di vicedoge. Nel sec. XV Fantino impiegò 30 anni di vita a continuo beneficio dello Stato e come uomo politico e come militare.
