La famiglia è Toscana, originaria di Prato; se ne trovano rami a S. Miniato, a S. Sepolcro, a Città di Castello, a Firenze. le prime memorie a Prato risalgono al 1200. Pure a Prato esiste il "Sepulchrum D. Meliorati de Melioratis civis Florentini et eius descendentium. Anno Domini MDLXXI". Altra antica sepoltura nella chiesa di S. Croce a Firenze porta l'arma sopra descritta. A Prato eravi un tempo una contrada denominata dei Migliorati. Fiorì intorno al 1200 il beato Elia figlio di Migliorato dei Migliorati, che diede opera con alcuni compagni a firmare l'ordine degli Agostiniani. Dal 1404 al 1406 fu Sommo Pontefice Cosmo de' Migliorati di Sulmona sotto il nome di Innocenzo VII. Nel 1600 ebbe fama di valoroso ufficiale Migliorato Capitano Colonnello di Livorno. Della antica nobiltà della famiglia fanno fede documenti degli Archivi di Firenze da quali appare, che dal 1381 al 1550 membri di questa famiglia
