Família emiliana antiga e muito nobre, originária do território de Bolonha, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. A clara nobreza da família é confirmada pela presença, de seu brasão, na valiosa obra "O dicionário brasão histórico de famílias italianas nobres e notáveis que estão extintas e florescendo", pelo genealogista Giovan Battista di Crollalanza, publicado em Pisa em 1886 em três volumes, de mais de 1400 páginas. A partir de uma análise cromática e simbólica do brasão, podemos obter algumas informações importantes sobre as virtudes associadas a esse sobrenome. Sendo a cor do céu, o azul representa a glória incorruptível, virtude e firmeza; a montanha, especialmente se com topos dourados, é um símbolo de grandeza, sabedoria e nobreza; o pássaro de prata é um símbolo de amor puro e puro, paz conjugal, alma e doçura simples e boa; o chefe de Anjou, apresentado à Itália
