A família Mingazzi era muito antiga e uma das mais conhecidas da Toscana Romagna, que se estabeleceram em Faenza na época em que esta cidade era governada pelos Manfredi. Ele veio de Modigliana e, de acordo com uma tradição antiga, tinha uma origem comum com as contagens de Guidi di Bagno. O progenitor dele era um branco, vivendo no século XIII. Dele nasceu Mengaccio, procurador geral de Manfredi, e de Mengaccio de Modigliana, Antonio I, pai de um Guido, administrador de Astorre Manfredi. Outro Mengaccio descende de Guido, que era então tesoureiro geral de Guido Antonio di Montefeltro, conde de Urbino, e desse Mengaccio Antonio II nasceu, de onde descendia o ramo de Faenza e, portanto, os Mengacci ainda vivendo na Áustria. Guilherme II descende de Antonio II, de Modigliana, e deles Giovanni Battista e Dionigi I, ambos membros do Conselho Geral de Faenza em 1570 o primeiro, em 1593
