Molto antica e tra le più note della Romagna toscana fu la famiglia Mingazzi, la quale si stabilì in Faenza ai tempi in cui questa città era signoreggiata dai Manfredi. Proveniva da Modigliana, e, secondo un'antica tradizione ebbe origine comune coi conti Guidi di Bagno. Capostipite di essa fu un Bianco, vivente nel secolo XIII. Da lui nacque Mengaccio che fu procuratore generale dei Manfredi, e da Mengaccio di Modigliana, Antonio I padre di un Guido, amministratore di Astorre Manfredi. Da Guido, discende un altro Mengaccio che fu poi tesoriere generale di Guido Antonio di Montefeltro, conte d'Urbino, e da questo Mengaccio nacque Antonio II, dal quale discese il ramo di Faenza, e quindi i Mengacci viventi tuttora in Austria. Da Antonio II, da Modigliana, discende Guglielmo, e da questi Giovanni Battista e Dionigi I, entrambi membri del Consiglio Generale di Faenza nel 1570 il primo, nel 1593 il secondo.
