Antico e nobilissimo casato fiorentino, appartenente all'Ordine delle famiglie Patrizie, sulla cui origine molto ha scritto il celebre Piero Monaldi, a soli 28 anni, diviso i moltissimi rami, il più celebre dei quali è conosciuto come Miniati di Dino, il cui predicato deriva dal secondo priore della famiglia, Miniato di Dino (II metà sec. XIV). Tal famiglia ha goduto per ben trentasei volte il Priorato, la prima volta nella persona di Giovanni, di Lorenzo, nel 1389, ed una il Gonfalonierato di Giustizia. Il detto Monaldi, nel sottolineare l'origine feudale della famiglia Miniati, ci riferisce come i Miniati abbiamo sempre goduto beni nel Castello di Petroio, nel Contado di Valdipesa. D'altronde, la tradizione vuole che la famiglia si sia originata, proprio, dai Signori di Petroio. In un antico testo araldico, inoltre, abbiamo l'onore di leggere: "Non si può negare, che questa famiglia per essere stata Ghibellina non patisse delle burasche
