Nobilissimo casato Italiano, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del Mondo. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, esso sarebbe una diramazione dell'illustrissima famiglia Pico della Mirandola, la quale ebbe la sovranità sul Ducato di Mirandola e su altri territori vicini, come Concordia, per oltre quattro secoli, finché i loro domini non vennero annessi dagli Estensi di Modena nel 1711. La famiglia origina, dunque, da un Ugo, figlio di Manfredo, al quale venne fatto dono per ricompensa dei servigi della corte di Quarantola e del castello della Mirandola. Francesco, nel 1311, essendo stato spedito a Brescia in qualità di ambasciatore ad Enrico VII imperatore, al fine di prestargli omaggio in nome della città di Modena, ottenne da quel monarca il titolo di vicario dell'impero nel Modenese e l'investitura di Quarantola, Mirandola e loro dipendenze. Paolo fu podestà di Verona, dove morì nel 1355.
