Sehr adlige italienische Familie mit klarer und angestammter Tugend, die sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte in verschiedenen Regionen Italiens und der Welt verbreitet hat. Nach dem, was uns überliefert ist, war es ein Zweig der sehr berühmten Familie Pico della Mirandola, die über vier Jahrhunderte lang die Souveränität über das Herzogtum Mirandola und andere nahe gelegene Gebiete wie Concordia hatte, bis ihre Domänen annektiert wurden von der Familie Este aus Modena im Jahre 1711. Die Familie stammt also von einem Ugo, Sohn von Manfredo, der ein Geschenk als Belohnung für die Dienste des Hofes von Quarantola und der Burg von Mirandola erhielt. Francesco, der 1311 als Botschafter des Kaisers Heinrich VII. nach Brescia geschickt wurde, um ihm im Namen der Stadt Modena zu huldigen, erhielt von diesem Monarchen den Titel eines Vikars des Reiches im Gebiet von Modena und die Investitur von Quarantola, Mirandola und ihren Abhängigkeiten.
