E' una antichissima e nobile famiglia di origine spagnola, diramata in epoca remota nei regni di Napoli e di Sicilia. Si ritiene che tragga nome ed origini dalla cittadina di Miranda in Castiglia famosa per il suo castello-fortezza. Nel 1275 i membri della famiglia risultano ascritti alla Nobiltà di Bitonto. Due membri di questa Casata occuparono la carica suprema di Vicerè. Nel 1586 Giovanni de Zuniga, Conte di Miranda, fu chiamato a reggere questa carica che in precedenza era stata retta da un suo zio che portava lo stesso nome. Rodrigo fu elevato a Vicerè nel 1646, alla Vigilia delle insurrezioni di Napoli Capitanate da Masaniello. Del ramo di Sicilia, Francesco ebbe la carica di Governatore della Tavola di Palermo. Il Capitano Gaspare venne insignito per i suoi meriti speciali del grado di Castellano della Colombara nel 1670. Nel 1690 si trova a Messina Sancio de Miranda Pons de Leon,
