Le prime memorie di questa famiglia, che à goduto nobiltà in Napoli ai seggi di Montagna e di Portanova ed in Avellino, rimontano al 1270. Ha essa posseduto 23 feudi, tre marchesati, due ducati ed il principato di Castellaneta. Girolamo regio consigliere nel 1427; Antonio presidente della R. Camera della Sommaria nel 1432; un altro Antonio reggente della S. R. C.; Giovanni presidente della R. Camera; Troiano reggente del S. R. Consiglio di Spagna. Questa casa si divise in quattro rami, cioè quello dei duchi di Campomele, marchesi di Acropoli e marchesi di Frignano, quello dei principi di Castellaneta e duchi di Bracigliano, ambedue estinti; il terzo si estinse nella famiglia Satriano conti di Casalduni, ed il quarto à avuto fine verso la metà del XIX secolo.
