Il cognome dovrebbe derivare, secondo tradizione, dall'insegna il Mirto alzata a Terracina da un ramo della famiglia Frangipane, che a seguito di sconfitta con altro ramo che alzava come insegna la Rosa, passava a Napoli. Vedi storia sull'opera dello Zazzera (Frangipane detti Mirti nel Regno). Relativamente ai dati sulla famiglia Mirti, oggi Mirti della Valle, che si dice ammessa di recente a Malta, e che nel 1683 Suor Maria Antonia Mirti risulta Priore del Monastero di S. Giovanni Gerosolomitano di Penne, decorata del Gran Croce del S.M.O.M. Infatti, come in altri stati, le Suore di Penne facevano parte del S.M.O.M. dipendevano dal Priorato di Capua e seguivano la stessa regola dei Cavalieri di Giustizia del S.M.O.M. come può rilevarsi dall'articolo del marchese Luigi Rangoni Macchiavelli, cancelliere del S.M.O.M.
