Antica famiglia di origine greca, stabilita da tempo assai remoto nelle Puglie, e propriamente nella città di Ugento nel Capo di Leuca, ove nel tenimento di Tricase fondò una badìa sotto il titolo di S. Maria de Mito, dotandola di vasti e fertili latifondi. Nel XIV secolo un ramo si trasferì in Martina e vi occupò le più eminenti cariche del Comune. Vito de Mita, nel 1525 fu messo ed internunzio al Conte di Brienza per prender atto dell'investitura del ducato di Martina concessogli dal Re di Spagna. I suoi discendenti furono in ogni tempo propugnatori de' diritti e privilegi del Comune nelle liti e controversie che questo ebbe col demanio e col duca. Pier-Antonio de Mita, ecclesiastico, uno de' più generosi benefattori del Capitolo, cui lasciò nel 1677 un capitale di oltre centomila ducati.
