Este apellido es una corrupción del nombre propio de Demetrio, y muy conocido en la República Argentina desde que lo llevó el prócer Bartolomé M. Mucho han discutido los genealogistas del otro lado del Atlántico sobre los orígenes de esta familia, incurriendo algunos en inexactitudes y aun en verdaderas fábulas. La paciente búsqueda realizada por otros escritores en los archivos parroquiales de la República Argentina y del Uruguay han permitido esclarecer el origen de este apellido. La mención más antigua que de él se ha encontrado se halla en el libro de bautismos de la parroquia de la Merced, de Buenos Aires, correspondiente al año de 1700. En 11 de Agosto se certifica el bautismo de Juan, nacido dos meses antes, hijo de Ventura de M. y de doña Catalina Ruiz.
