Antica ed assai nobile casata napoletana, le cui prime memorie, risalgono al XIII secolo, la quale ha goduto nobiltà in Napoli, nei Seggi di Nido e Portanova, ove la Famiglia, nel 1330 possedeva la contrada detta "L'Appennino delli Moccia". Nel corso della loro storia , fin dal XIV secolo, i Moccia, ricchi e potenti, possedettero numerose Baronie, tra cui Colle d'Anchise, Castromezzano, Ceriglialo, Cisterna, Colledanchise e le Contee di Nicastro, di Fontanelle e Sant'Angelo a Cupolo; i marchesati di Casabona (Calabria Citra), Montemalo (Principato Ultra), con il marchese Pietro di Montemalo nel 1683 e Montemari, con il marchese Scipione Moccia nel 1750, anche deputato nel Seggio di Portanova in Napoli. Essi, inoltre, divennero Duchi di Scarfizzi, già Carfizzi (Calabria Citra), con Domenico Moccia, nel 1710, e Duchi di Ferrazzano (Principato Ultra), nel 1699, in persona di Vitaliano Moccia. Numerosi e significativi i monumenti che di cotal famiglia sorgono a Napoli,
