Família antiga, cujo apelido deve ter derivado de alcunha, talvez de Mozinho, que é o mesmo que Mocinho, aplicada a pessoa jovem para a diferençar de outra de maio idade, se não dada a alguém que desempenhou o ofício de mozinho, isto é, de moço ou menino do coro em qualquer sé. O mais antigo deste apelido que se conhece é João M., que no ano de 1269 tinha fazendas na Beira, místicas com as de João Lourenço da Cunha, instituidor do morgado e Tábua, poi outro do mesmo apelido, Gonçalo M., referido em certo documento de 13 de Junho de 1145, não existiu porquanto o diploma é falso. Embora João M. possuísse bens na província da Beira, os M. não se fixaram nela, mas na do Alentejo, sendo o seu grande centro em Castelo de Vide. Há quem diga que o apelido M. se escreve Mauzinho.
