Originaria di Napoli. Appartenne a questa famiglia lo storico Pietro, n. a Napoli il 23 gennaio 1775 e morto in esilio a Firenze l'11 novembre 1831. Scrisse, come è noto la "Storia del reame di Napoli" che va dal 1734 al 1825, oltre ad altre opere minori. Cadetto d'artiglieria nel 1796, dir. gen. dei ponti e strade nel 1812, fu maresciallo di campo nel 1813, consigliere di Stato nel 1814 e decorato del titolo trasmissibile di barone nel 1815. Da Donato, fratello di Pietro, discese un altro Donato, presidente di Sez. di Corte d'Appello, in favore del quale con RR. LL. PP. del 22 maggio 1904 venne rinnovato il detto titolo di barone. Questa famiglia è iscritta nel Libro d'Oro nob. ital. e nell'Elenco nob. col titolo di Barone (mpr.) e quello di nob. (mf.) nella persona di Donato, di Cesare, di Donato.
