A origem deste sobrenome ilustre, por referências de historiadores da época e outros encontrados por Araldis nos arquivos de registro de cidades e outros particulares, poderíamos afirmar, mas não assegurar, que este brasão ou outro muito semelhante a ele, surgiu inicialmente do século XI ao XIV, particularmente na corte pessoal de Dona Urraca López de Haro, nomeada Senhora de Estella no início do século XIII. As referências desta família parecem ser especificadas com maior frequência do século XV ao XIX, sobretudo os factos da descoberta das Ilhas Marquesas (Oceano Pacífico), sendo um dos oficiais ao serviço de Dom Álvaro de Mendaña, Avanço de o mar oceano. Tudo isto parece coincidir com a memória familiar de alguns membros do ramo da família Couto.
