Antica ed illustre famiglia siciliana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Conosciuta come del Monaco, delle Monache, lo Monaco o la Monaca, questa famiglia vuolsi sia di origine francese e giunta in in Italia anteriormente al tempo di re Alfonso V. Primieramente si stabilì in Cosenza (Calabria) da donde poi passò in Sicilia, ponendo residenza nella città di Palermo e possedette i feudi di Baccarati, di Fegotto, Bruchito o Volta della Monaca. Altri rami fiorirono in Mineo, Trapani, Messina e Napoli (Campania).
