Originaria francese, trapiantata in Italia al tempo di Carlomagno e stabilita in Orvieto. L'Imperatore Ottone II la favorì di molti privilegi e concesse il dominio di Bagnorea a Lodovico ed i suoi successori ne furono fatti conti nel 975. Questa famiglia fu di parte guelfa e combattè sempre con prospera fortuna l'avversaria ghibellina per lo spazio di oltre cento anni, e ne restò superiore per modo che nel 1315 divenne arbitra e quasi padrona di Orvieto, ma in progresso di tempo venuti i Monaldeschi fra essi in discordia si divisero in quattro famiglie o consorterie che presero il nome della Cervara, del Cane, della Vipera e dell'Aquila dai cimieri sovrapposti all'arma comune. La prima fu la più potente e si vuole che il cimiero del cervo fosse stato donato a Roderico MOnaldo da Carlomagno, e però Ermanno principale dei Monaldeschi e signore di Orvieto essendogli stato confermato il detto cimiero
