Il cognome, è ovvio, deriva dal luogo d'origine situato, grosso modo, a metà strada tra Tortona e Genova e nelle due direttrici i R. affluirono sin dal XII secolo; in tempi successivi diramarono pure a Milano e nel Canton Ticino. A Tortona Giacomo è teste nella vertenza dell'8 agosto 1210 relativa a terreni all'Isella contestati dai Doglio di Ponzano al monastero di Rivalta; è pure teste in altri atti del 23 gennaio 1218, del 17 maggio e 3 ottobre 1219, del 1 dicembre 1219; consigliere nel 1218, il 12 e il 17 marzo partecipa alla stipulazione degli accordi tra il comune di Tortona e quello di Genova giurandone l'osservanza; eletto console di giustizia, il 3 apprile 1219 condanna Robaldo Crotto in una causa vertente col Capitolo tortonese. Guglielmo è teste in istrumento del 26 marzo 1218 pertinente donazioni di terreni in Bassignana al monastero di Rivalta; Giovanni di Rufino il
