Apellido toponímico originario de la zona pirenaica Vasco Aragónesa, significa "hijos del monte del Arca" río afluente del Cinca. Su origen inicial es impreciso pues desde el siglo XIII lo encontramos escrito con distintas ortografías Mont D'Ara, Mondara y Mondarai. Don Alfonso M. figura como notario de la población de Biescas en el siglo XV. Don Garci M. figura como acreedor en distintos documentos fechados en Zaragoza en los años 1536 y 1541. Don Juan M. tuvo problemas con el Tribunal del Santo Oficio en el año 1603. del cual salió absuelto. La nobleza de esta familia fué probada al servicio de distintos lugartenientes del Reino de Aragón durante los siglos XVI y XVII y en las ordenes militares de Santiago y Calatrava. Otra rama de esta familia permaneció fiel a la corte de Olite de los reyes de Navarra hasta el siglo XVI.
