Sulla cresta di un'altura nei pressi di tortona sorgeva il castello fortificato che apparteneva ai tortonesi e nel quale risiedevano i signori che del luogo presero il nome. Guasco M. partecipò valorosamente alla difesa di Tortona assediata dal Barbarossa sostenendo il 15 aprile 1155 ripetuti assalti del nemico a Porta Genovese; dopo la resa che imponeva l'esodo di tutti gli abitanti dalla città (17 aprile 1155) i M. si ritirarono nell'omonimo loro castello. Da un istrumento del 10 gennaio 1186 rilevasi che Baldus Montegualdonis era canonico accolito del Capitolo della cattedrale di Tortona; canonico della cattedrale è pure Ido nel 1202; i M. sono inclusi nell'elenco dlle famiglie nobili fiorenti nell'anno 1293 in Tortona; Orsola nel 1312 è religiosa nel convento di S.Chiara in Tortona. Aderendo alla costituzione del Corpo dei Militi, il comune di Tortona con atto consolare del 15 maggio 1327 ascrive all'ordine equestre le famiglie preminenti della
